WHEN TRP RATINGS MATTER ...

The Role that has been played by the Media in the present political system is immense , especially in a ‘Developing’ and a ‘Democratic’ country like India. It has rightly earned it’s position as the fourth pillar in any democracy of the world , more significantly in India . I believe there is an association between the ‘ developing media ‘ and the ‘social changes’ that are taking place . Though I’m still not sure about the degree of its association . But yes , Media , especially the Electronic Media’
has brought a change .
It has been tremendous in highlighting the cases of such as Jessica Lal ,Manjunath and so on .

But just as I say that , with so many News Channels having come up , I believe they are much into business of popularity nowadays . The order of the day has become ‘Sensationalism’ . With TRP ratings playing a major role , it’s become more a commercial business now .

It gets really disgusting when I see ‘ Abhishekh-Aishwarya ‘ marriage being so madly hyped , when I see “ Brad Pitt gets a new hair style “ as a headline , when I see 30min programmes about the triangle love story of Dhoni,Deepika and Yuvraj and when I see ‘ Rakhi Sawanth with her weeping skills and all her cheap tricks for public popularity and sympathy , fooling the electronic media around .
It attracts more viewership , TRP ratings increase , more ads , more money . No place for ethics anymore.
Sorry to say , this has become a trend with few of the channels . I learned from another blog that such Journalism is called ' Yellow Journalism ' .

But the point I’m trying to make is that , it’s important to strike a balance between all this . The right balance between taking up issues of National Interest , Voicing the poor , Entertainment and Creating Awareness .

It would be then that the ‘Indian Media’ can make a world of difference in the upliftment of this country .

Agree - sensationalism is the order of the day when it comes to the media - not just the electronic but also the print media.
Media sure has a bigger role to play rather than indulge in these sick gimmicks to gain popularity.

Arwindh February 17, 2008 at 6:17 PM

its a pity to see the media getting cheaper day by day..may be citizen journalists could help it to get into the right place

Anonymous February 18, 2008 at 11:57 AM

True Arjun !
we rely on media to show us the world beyond our doors. Now things like ratings and advertising play more critical roles, all of this ultimately affects the content of the information being provided.
When a news media organisation is driven by profit and the profit is dependant on the ratings, it’s very important to them to ensure people keep watching. Stories are glorified so frequently on the news that it’s hard to be certain of the difference between entertainment and reality.

Keep posting - Radha

Interested in blogroll, comment in my blog after adding mine !!

Arjun February 18, 2008 at 7:27 PM

@ Mohan

I don't mean the power of media is destroying the world....Infact , its played a vital role in our advancements.....
It's just that they must stop sensationalising petty issues when there r many other important issues which needs to be highlighted...

Comfortably Numb February 18, 2008 at 8:52 PM

yea media has turned filthy!
Even i wrote about media in my blog!

"Even aishwarya rai going for a pedicure is a BREAKING NEWS"

HA HA!

bt the unfortunate fact of the matter is that the general target audience like sensational journalism rather than authentic news....its more entertainment than facts that get sold....thats sad

Setu February 19, 2008 at 5:03 PM

that's true man.
nice post.

Japmeet February 21, 2008 at 12:59 PM

damn correct on this one! these news channels just want $money$ and they dont care how they do that. I mean u correctly pointed out the hype over Brad Pitt's new hair style (sic on the part of the media. Anyways really good post, keep up the good work :)

Anonymous February 22, 2008 at 2:58 PM

don get me started on the media dude.. its in such a shabby state.. personally i think it reflects the sentiments of the nation though.. we are as naive as our media is.. thts how society works...

Unknown February 22, 2008 at 8:16 PM

Dude i could't have agreed more...
Even i think of this when some thing's that are not worthy of mention grab headlines and break into BREAKING NEWS shit...

I don't think it will ever change... but seriouly there are some channels such as BBC world that are maintaining old school rules.. but even they fail to track down some key issue's.. media is more of "saas bahu serials" that anything else..

Pranay February 23, 2008 at 11:47 AM

media is almost a nuisance these days.. they often distort the truth trying to sensationalize things and bag TRPs..
i think media has an important role in framing public opinion.. and its high time they realize it and give us some worthy and informational content..
nice write-up arjun..
the red color of the template hits a bit.. but the diary is cool.. consider changing the color of the template if possibl..

the problem is the with the audience. the emotional indian audience loves entertainment to either cushion their sensitivity or get value for money with they invest in the TV channels for being entertained. whats the harm in having a laugh at someone else's cost?! they got all the money afterall, won't hurt them much.

how many ppl enjoy the way media makes fun at the cost of others?!
doesn't everyone love gossip and want to know the latest news on gossip and the mirch-masala going on in the lives of celebrities out of their normal boring lives?!
celebrities are attention craving people and thus they are there, always in the limelight, getting weird stuff done to themselves just to hit the news channels.

the problem with media is that it shows the celebrities with their oH! sO glamorous lifestyles making the public unhappy with their own lives, and wanting the all the glitz n glamour.(in response to an earlier comment) i wudnt b surprised if the number of pedicures went up on the day ash got hers done.

all im trying to say is that u get wht u pay for. if ppl stopped watching such cheap entertainment then there wud be no need to supply it.

Hopefully, with a more literate audience we can hope for more intellectual and educational debates. (they don't hv to b boring all the time... learn to live and live to learn. ;) not like knowing the latest developments on the abhishek-ash marriage is going to get an A/100% in ure next exam or ure next promotion. unless ure one of those jerks who thrive on gossip. i'm sure u must be eligible for ure PHD by now with all the crap being publicised.

ps- iLovEE not having a TV :P

Unknown User February 27, 2008 at 11:43 AM

First thing first...
India is not a developing country.

As for media...they have all stooped to the level of paid sex workers - both in India and abroad.

A small kid - prince falls into a pit...they created a sensation. Abhi-Ash marriage is more important than 15 men gunned down on the same day.

Hi Arjun,

What u said is truth.. It was not necessary to bring some ones love story to media..

As the viewers are more for such kind of shows than to any other shows which has National interest .. Media is taking advantage out of that by making money..

Good to see such kind of awareness blog :).. Keep going...

All the best..

Good one keep the good work going, nice way of expressing things...

CRD March 12, 2008 at 1:56 PM

well, u have to watch india tv for such gimmicks...its really pathetic..30 mins spent on people who can whistle the longest, on a boy who's a reincarnation of an american (just because he speaks gibberish in a supposedly american accent, nevermind that even the americans will wonder what the hell he's saying),witches, rakhi sawant slapping abhishek awasthi, salman slapping his gf(s), etc etc.

apparently , tv journos even tagged along with MNS supporters just sothat they could catch videos of them assaulting north indians. they even had chai and frndly chats with them. all this just for selfish motives.ethics be damned?

Arjun March 12, 2008 at 2:10 PM

@ c r d

the last point u made was very very right man...
I read somewhere that when India lost the world cup and there were (senseless) burning of posters and worse things like that....A person was trying to burn the Indian flag , and camera man of a news channel told him to wait , set his camera right and said go on....
Tell me can reduce to worse than this...Really sick....

Comfortably Numb March 21, 2008 at 3:40 PM

Yea man the news channels really suck these days! And they got nothing more to show than celeb gossips and filthy superstitions!

Cheers

Anonymous March 24, 2008 at 2:42 PM

Man...

you should just look at STAR NEWS...

It is now the best news channel and the manner in which they manipulate news. (They show very little news...most of it is astrology, the gr8 khali, lil' champs, jhoom india, etc....)

Tina Angelin March 29, 2008 at 12:53 PM

ohhh i totally agree..news channel lost its value...few months bak some news channel broadcasted BIG's Cold as Breakin news...Thats cheap trp...

It makes me mad....

Rinzu June 27, 2008 at 12:31 PM

yeah media isn't clean...

they wana make money and grab attention...

n sadly we are relying on them for all that we wana know...

Rinzu August 26, 2008 at 2:53 PM

ur ryteee... there must be some system which enures that the media doesnt serve "crap" but things which really need attention...the abhisheks aishwaryand srks are not want the common man wants to see always... the news which desreves attention needs to b shown to the public...

nicee postt..
